Sturgeon fishing

Bait, bait and best times

14 May 2025

Sturgeon fishing is a fascinating and constantly growing discipline among sport fishing enthusiasts. This prehistoric, imposing and combative fish presents a stimulating challenge to even the most experienced anglers.

Today you will discover everything you need to tackle a successful sturgeon fishing session.

What is the best bait for fishing sturgeon?

When it comes to bait for sturgeon, the feeding habits of this fish must be taken into account. Sturgeon feed mainly on the bottom, preferring lures with a strong smell and soft texture. The most effective sturgeon baits include:

  • Boiles for sturgeon: specifically formulated with highly attractive ingredients such as liver, fish, spices and fermented cheese.
  • Soft pellets and pastes: ideal for gradually releasing flavours and attracting sturgeon even from long distances.
  • Ripened or fermented cheeses: among the most commonly used natural baits, often diced or crushed in combination with other baits.

Many experienced anglers rely on self-made baits, prepared with sturgeon-specific flours and attractors. In our catalogue, you can find all the ingredients to create your own customised bait, or opt for ready-made baits and pastures tested for this type of fishing.

Pond sturgeon bait

Pond sturgeon fishing is perfect for those looking for a more controlled experience, but not an easy one! In this environment, pond sturgeon bait must be even more attractive in order to stand out among the many lures present. The best are:

  • Cheese or liver boilies
  • Thick flavoured paste
  • Fermented cheese cubes
  • Flavoured pellets (preferably soaked first)

Sturgeon fishing is an exciting challenge, but choosing the right baits and pastures is crucial to achieving results.

What cheese to use for sturgeon fishing?

Cheese is considered a highly attractive bait for sturgeon fishing, thanks to its strong and persistent smell, capable of stimulating the appetite of even the most apathetic fish. The most effective method of baiting cheese is to cube it on a hair rig, similar to what is done with boilies: choose a cheese with a firm, but not excessively hard consistency (such as mature Gorgonzola, provolone, fermented or blue cheeses), cut it into 1-2 cm cubes and bait it with a needle and stopper.

The slow and constant release of the aroma makes the cheese particularly suitable in still waters, such as ponds, where it can make a real difference. In addition to direct priming, flavoured processed cheeses can also be used in pastures or slurries, exploiting their high attractiveness. Fatter cheeses, in particular, provide a longer-lasting olfactory effect in water, making them also ideal for the preparation of home-made sturgeon baits.

Homemade sturgeon bait

Preparing homemade sturgeon bait can make a real difference, especially if you fish in a pond where sturgeon are used to a wide variety of smells and tastes. The aim is to create a rich, nutritious and highly attractive mix that will stimulate the interest of the fish even at a distance. The key ingredients are:

  • Protein flours, such as fish meal or meat meal, give body to the bait and release an intense and persistent scent in the water.
  • Breadcrumbs, useful for binding the ingredients and increasing dispersion.
  • Cheese flour, which adds a strong, pungent smell, much appreciated by sturgeons.
  • Strong natural flavourings such as garlic, onion, paprika or curry, all of which stimulate the fish's sense of smell.
  • Molasses or other natural sweeteners help to bind the bait, increase its palatability and improve its hold on the bottom.

Mix it with water (also flavoured) until the consistency is sticky and not too wet. The addition of soaked pellets or pieces of fermented cheese increases the effectiveness of the bait.

What is the best time to fish for sturgeon?

One of the most frequently asked questions among sturgeon anglers is:What is the best time to fish for sturgeon? Although sturgeon can be caught throughout the year, there are times when they are definitely more active and receptive, making fishing much more productive and rewarding.

  • Autumn: A time when sturgeon feed more in preparation for winter.
  • Winter: you can find sturgeon in fee-paying ponds, where the fish's activity remains high.
  • Spring: when the water begins to warm up and the fish move more actively.
  • Summer: a time when sturgeon can become more apathetic, especially in the warmer hours. Better to fish early in the morning or at sunset.
